Why Is ChatGPT Not Working? 9 Fixes That Usually Work
- 1 Start with three basic tests. Status page, private window, phone hotspot --- that splits "everyone is affected" from "it's your setup" in 60 seconds.
- 2 Check the general detection table we concluded. Firslty chack possible causes from your side. Extensions, stale cache and cookies, the wrong sign-in method, or the wrong account.
- 3 The same account can work on your phone and fail on your laptop. Your phone runs on mobile data and its own app. Your laptop runs on Wi-Fi, extensions and the system clock.
- 4 Stop guessing when nothing works. Collect the exact error text, the request ID and the time, then contact support.
ChatGPT is a chatbot that answers questions in a chat window. But you might find ChatGPT not working frequently in certain period. When ChatGPT is not working, the cause is almost always one of nine things: a broken server, a blocked network, a stubborn browser, a bad login, a failed request, a refused file, a device mismatch, a switched-off feature, or a support ticket. If you typed why is chatgpt not working into a search box, this is for you.
You have probably refreshed and restarted already. Those rarely help. Below is one solution per cause.
Part 1. Problem and Solution Cheat Sheet
Three 20 seconds Test at First
- Open status.openai.com and check the ChatGPT row. Red or yellow means the problem is on OpenAI's side and nothing you change will help.
- Open a private window. Chrome: Ctrl+Shift+N. Safari: File, then New Private Window. If it works there, an extension or stale data is the cause.
- Switch networks. Use your phone's hotspot and connect the computer to it. If that fixes it, your Wi-Fi, office network or VPN is the cause.
Most people stop after the second test.
Find the line that sounds like your problem, then read the part we point to.
Every Common Problem and Its Fix
Change one thing at a time, then test.
Part 2. Is ChatGPT Down for Everyone?
Check the Status Page First
The status page is the only place that shows faults affecting everybody. It lists about 25 services, most marked Operational, a few Degraded performance, Partial outage or Full outage. It only shows faults OpenAI admits to, so it can stay green while your plan is broken. Green means "no big outage", not "your problem is fixed".
What Broke in October
Following is the official ChatGPT status history info, you can check if you also ever met those official changes caused working issues:
The public log recorded 25 incidents in October 2026, so something broke every few days. The October 15 fault hit only the phone apps, so one account can behave differently on two devices.
What "At Capacity" Means
You may see "ChatGPT is at capacity". The service is not broken; the servers are full and your request is in a queue. On October 15, 2026, Thibault Sottiaux, who leads Codex and ChatGPT at OpenAI, posted on X that the team had added computing power. Switch models, wait, and stop hammering the button.
Is Your Country on the List?
OpenAI keeps a list of countries and regions where ChatGPT works. Read it on the OpenAI supported countries page. Mainland China, Russia, Iran and North Korea are not on it; Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, the UK, the US, Canada and Australia are. The page warns that using the service from outside the list may get your account blocked or suspended.
Part 3. Why the Page Will Not Load
Try Another Network First
When you cannot access ChatGPT and the page never loads, the cause is sometimes your network or your browser.
Turn on your phone's mobile data and make a hotspot.
Join that hotspot on the computer, not your usual Wi-Fi.
Open ChatGPT again.
It loads? Your Wi-Fi, router or office network is the cause.
Still blank? Go to Part 5.
On office and school networks, ask IT to allow both chatgpt.com and oaiusercontent.com. Allow only the first and you can chat but not upload.
Turn Off VPN and Proxy
A VPN hides your real location by sending traffic through another country. A proxy works the same way. Both can trip safety checks and break the long connection ChatGPT needs while it writes. Turn the VPN off and test.
Access Denied Error Code 1020
Access denied error code 1020 means the request never reached ChatGPT. A firewall looked at your IP address, called it suspicious, and turned you away.
- Switch to mobile data. It fixes this more often than anything else.
- Change your VPN server, or turn the VPN off.
- Wait a while. The block often lifts on its own.
Flush DNS Only as a Last Step
Your computer looks up the address of chatgpt.com before it can connect. That lookup is handled by DNS. If it breaks, other sites work but ChatGPT does not.
- Windows: run ipconfig /flushdns in Command Prompt.
- Mac: run sudo dscacheutil -flushcache, then sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder.
- Or switch to a public DNS such as 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8.
Part 4. The Page Opens but Acts Broken
A Clean Browser Window
A private window is a clean browser session with no extensions and no old saved data. It is the fastest way to test whether your browser is the problem. If ChatGPT works there, the cause is an extension, and privacy blockers are the usual suspects. Turn them off one at a time.
Clear ChatGPT Data, Not Everything
Your browser keeps a cache of web pages and cookies that prove who you are. When either goes bad, the page loads half way, or bounces you to the login screen.
- Chrome and Edge: click the padlock, open Site settings, choose Delete data, then search for chatgpt.
- Firefox: click the padlock, then Clear cookies and site data.
- Safari: Safari menu, Settings, Privacy, Manage Website Data, then search for chatgpt.
This signs you out. It does not delete your chats, because they live on your account.
Four Safari Switches to Turn Off
If Safari will not load ChatGPT while Chrome works on the same computer, four Safari settings are the usual reason.
-
Turn off iCloud Private Relay: System Settings, your Apple account, iCloud, Private Relay. It can block the sign-in check.
-
Turn off content blockers. Safari, Settings, Privacy, Content Blockers. Switch off every one for the test.
-
Turn off "Prevent cross-site tracking": Safari, Settings, Privacy. It often breaks the sign-in flow.
Remove the saved chatgpt site data, using the steps above.
-
Try Chrome or Firefox. If they work, the problem is Safari, not ChatGPT.
Part 5. Login Fails or Features Vanish
Five Login Screens Explained
OpenAI's own login troubleshooting guide lists the messages people hit most often.
- "Checking your browser..." never finishes. Turn off your VPN or proxy, and allow cookies and scripts for chatgpt.com and auth.openai.com.
- A plain error appears. Wait at least 60 seconds, then try once more. Do not click again straight away.
- "Wrong verification method." If you registered with Google, you cannot sign in with an email and password. "This user already exists" means you stopped halfway through signing up, so use the sign-in page.
- "We detected unusual login activity." Clear cache and cookies, change networks, turn off the VPN, and wait up to one hour.
- No code arrives. Check spam, add [email protected] to your safe list, and use the newest code.
On an iPhone, signing in with Google can fail with "Cookies are disabled": Settings, Apps, Safari, Advanced, then turn off Block All Cookies. On Android, if sign-in will not open, update Chrome and Google Play.
Check Your Account and Plan
Most people have more than one OpenAI account, and the subscription travels with it. In the wrong one, Plus looks like it has vanished. Check your plan in ChatGPT Settings, Apple Subscriptions, or Google Play payments. A failed renewal also leaves you on the free plan. See the ChatGPT pricing page.
Part 6. Reading the Error Message
ChatGPT shows short error messages, and the wording changes with each version. Match the meaning, not the words.
Match What You See
OpenAI keeps a longer troubleshooting guide for error messages.
Unknown Error Usually Means a File Issue
"Unknown error occurred" tells you nothing, so people hunt for a hidden cause. It is nearly always the file.
- The file is too big. See the limits below.
- The file has a password, or it blocks copying.
- The file is a scan: pictures only, no selectable text. Run OCR first.
- The file is damaged, or an extension is blocking the upload. Try a clean window.
Still stuck? Make a tiny PDF with one or two pages of plain text and no password, and upload that. If it works, your original file was the problem. If not, it is your browser, network or account.
The Published Upload Limits
OpenAI's own file upload guide sets the limits: 512 MB per document or slide deck, 20 MB per picture, about 50 MB per spreadsheet, 2 million tokens per file, 80 uploads every 3 hours, and 3 files a day for free. Failed uploads still count, so three failures can use up a free-plan day.
When Only One Chat Breaks
If one conversation is broken while everything else works, that chat is probably too heavy. Start a new chat and paste the background again. If one feature is broken, send a short plain-text message first, like "reply with two words: got it".
Part 7. Phone Works but Laptop Does Not
Same account, same ChatGPT. The phone uses mobile data and its own app; the laptop uses Wi-Fi, a browser, extensions and saved data. When the phone works and the laptop does not, the laptop is the problem.
Four Comparison Tests
Checks on the Laptop
-
Update the browser. In Chrome, open Help, then About. In Safari, use the App Store.
-
Check the date and time on your computer. A wrong clock makes sign-in fail for no obvious reason.
-
Close the browser completely and reopen it. Closing the tab is not the same.
-
Check whether security software or your employer is blocking the site.
-
On school or work Wi-Fi, ask IT to whitelist both ChatGPT domains.
Try another browser such as Firefox or Edge.
The Reverse Case
Sometimes the phone is the broken one. Update the ChatGPT app. If only the app fails, open the same account in a browser: if that works, the app is the problem. On Android: Settings, Apps, ChatGPT, Storage, Clear cache.
Part 8. ChatGPT Skills That Will Not Run
Where Skills Actually Live
A skill is a set of written instructions that tell ChatGPT how to handle a certain kind of job. They are not in Settings. Go to the sidebar, then Plugins, then Plugin Directory, then Skills. If that tab is missing, the feature is off for your account.
Four Reasons Skills Fail
- Your plan may not include skills. OpenAI's skill docs list Business, Enterprise, Healthcare and Edu; the plugin FAQ describes personal skills for paid plans. The pages disagree, so check your screen.
- An admin has not turned it on, or you are on the wrong account. Edu and Enterprise workspaces start switched off; work and personal accounts are separate.
- Skills do not sync across devices. Personal skills are not copied between desktop, browser and phone, so one installed on your laptop is not on your phone yet.
- The skill itself is broken, or was blocked after an upload scan.
Point four catches almost everyone. Not syncing looks like a bug, but it works that way.
Use Skills Without the Feature
OpenAI's own workaround is to paste the skill instructions into a Project. Projects exist on free and paid plans, and the instructions apply to every chat inside it. You lose the automatic trigger but keep the workflow.
Skills can also stop working because OpenAI is retiring Custom GPTs on December 11, 2026, with approved Enterprise workspaces held until February 11, 2027. After the move a GPT turns into a skill and the old GPT becomes read-only. See the OpenAI Custom GPT retirement FAQ and the GPT troubleshooting guide.
Part 9. When to Contact OpenAI Support
When to Stop Troubleshooting
Contact support once you have changed browsers, devices and networks, and the status page shows no incident. At that point the cause sits with OpenAI. Collect these first:
- The full error message, word for word.
- The request ID, if the page shows one.
- The date, time and time zone.
- Your device and browser versions.
- Website or app, and before or after sign-in.
- A screenshot, but never a password or API key.
Hi, I'm seeing an error in ChatGPT.
Error message: [paste the exact text]
Request ID: [paste it here]
When: [date, time, time zone]
Device: [device and browser versions]
Where: [website / app], [before / after sign-in]
Steps I already tried: [list them]
Part 10. ChatGPT Alternative: Chat with PDF in PDNob and Cooperate with AI
Everything above assumes you want a general chatbot. If your job is "what does this contract actually say" or you need an agent to process your PDF working file, you will need a dedicated document tool. PDNob PDF Editor ships an AI layer built for that.
PDNob is a light weight AI PDF tool that edits text, runs OCR, converts files, fills forms and signs documents, plus an AI add-on for asking questions and performing your required workflow about your document. ChatGPT gives you text. PDNob AI's AI Chat gives you text plus the source: every answer carries a source link and a page number, so you can jump to that line in the PDF and check it. For legal or technical files, that matters more than model size.
AI features in PDNob
- AI Chat - ask questions about your PDF and get source-linked answers.
- PDF Summary - the core points of a long document.
- AI Translation - translate a PDF with the layout kept in place.
- AI Workflow - ask AI to convert, translate or OCR, or do other workflow for you by prompts
Steps Guide to Use AI in PDNob
Open your PDF in PDNob.
-
Switch to the AI Chat panel. Ask a question you can check, or prompt the task you require the AI to do tasks, like convert PDFs

FAQ on Why Is ChatGPT Not Working
Q1. Q: Why is ChatGPT not working today - is it down for everyone?
A1: A: Look at the incident log first. October 2026 recorded 25 incidents, so something broke nearly every other day. Green on the dashboard but broken for you? Keep reading.
Q2. Q: Why won't my ChatGPT work even after I restart everything?
A2: A: Restarting rarely helps, because the cause is rarely a frozen program. Three tests beat ten restarts: the incident log, a private window, mobile data.
Q3. Q: Why does ChatGPT not work for me but work for everyone else?
A3: A: Almost always it sits in your own setup: a blocked extension, stale cookies, the wrong account, an office network, or a country outside the supported list. Start at Part 4.
Q4. Q: Unknown error occurred ChatGPT - what should I try first?
A4: A: Start with the tiny-PDF test in Part 7. If that file goes through, your original upload is the culprit: check its size, password, and whether it is only a scan.
Q5. Q: Why is ChatGPT not working on my laptop but working on my phone?
A5: A: Same account, different path. The phone is on cellular data with its own app, while the laptop goes through Wi-Fi and a browser full of extensions. Run the four tests in Part 8, then check the clock.
Q6. Q: ChatGPT not loading Safari - what should I check?
A6: A: Four Safari settings cause most of it: iCloud Private Relay, content blockers, cross-site tracking, and old site data. Switch them off one by one, then retest.
Q7. Q: Why is my ChatGPT skill not working?
A7: A: Most often it was never installed on the device you use, because personal skills stay on the device where you added them. Look under Plugins in the sidebar.
Q8. Q: Will my account get banned for using a VPN?
A8: A: OpenAI's supported countries page says access from another country may lead to a blocked or suspended account. We are quoting it.
Conclusion
Most people who search why is chatgpt not working are guessing. Split the question in two: is this everybody or just me? If everybody, it is a server problem and you wait. If it is just you, it is one of eight local causes, each with a short test. Do the three tests in Part 1, find your row in Part 2, then read it.
This guide was checked on October 30, 2026, when the status page showed all systems operational. Error wording, limits and features change, so check it again.
