readanybook.com and lib.readanybook.com are the root domain and subdomain of the same operation --- not two different sites.

You can tell just from the naming: readanybook.com is the apex (root) domain, and lib.readanybook.com is a lib-prefixed subdomain under it. Nobody outside the registrant can create a subdomain of a domain they don't own.

If you want third-party confirmation, the Certificate Transparency log on crt.sh is the cleanest proof. Every certificate issued for readanybook.com since September 30, 2014 has listed .readanybook.com in its SAN list, and CAs only sign that wildcard after the registrant passes a DNS or HTTP challenge on every subdomain it covers. The same operator has also extended control to multiple language subdomains in the last year (see the next section).

This is where we have to slow down. Free online book sites live in a copyright grey zone, and the public record on readanybook.com shows real friction with rights-holders.

I checked the Lumen database on September 16, 2026, and found three relevant DMCA (Copyright) complaints logged against readanybook.com:

The pattern here is interesting and worth reading carefully. The 2023 notice from The Publishers Association is the most authoritative signal that rights-holders have pushed back against specific titles hosted on the platform. The two 2025 notices from "ReadAnyBook Team" themselves look more like counter-notices or takedown requests targeted at Google's index --- i.e. the operator actively managing what appears in search results.

So, is readanybook.com legit or a scam for actual online free books? It is not a phishing scam in the classic sense --- the site delivers books and the payment prompts appear real. It is, however, a platform that has had formal copyright complaints filed against it by a major publisher trade body. Whether individual titles are properly licensed is something only the rights-holder of each title can confirm. We can't give legal advice, and you shouldn't take our word for the licensing of any specific book you find there.

The legality question is upstream of the safety question, but for most readers the safety one is what they actually care about. We broke this into three signals: what Reddit says, what we saw in person, and what VirusTotal reports.
